How Geopolitics and Disinformation Are Reshaping Climate Action?

When 09:30 - 11:30
Where Kristalna palača, BTC

As global priorities shift, climate action is increasingly shaped by geopolitical dynamics. The recent US elections and its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement have raised uncertainties about international climate commitments, while China’s expanding role in sustainability continues to spark debate. Europe, meanwhile, faces the challenge of balancing ambitious climate policies with geopolitical pressures, including the ongoing energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine. Despite these complexities, the UK remains committed to net-zero targets, building on its leadership from COP26 in Glasgow.

At the same time, disinformation is emerging as a major threat to climate progress. Greenwashing and misleading narratives undermine public trust, shaping policies and corporate actions. Tackling these challenges is essential to ensuring transparency and meaningful climate action.

Speakers will be announced shortly.

9:40 AM – 10:40 AM | Panel 1: The Future of Climate Action in the Shifting Geopolitics

As geopolitical tensions rise and climate challenges intensify, the green transition is increasingly shaped by global power shifts, energy security concerns, and economic competition. How are major players such as Europe, the US, China and India adapting their climate strategies in the face of shifting alliances, trade policies, and technological rivalry? And what are the opportunities for strengthening international cooperation while accelerating climate action?

10:40 AM – 11:25 AM | Panel 2: Fighting Climate Disinformation

Disinformation and misleading narratives can shape public perceptions of climate policies and corporate sustainability efforts. We will explore the phenomenon of greenwashing, where companies exaggerate or misrepresent their climate commitments, whether deliberately or due to lack of knowledge or awareness, leading to the (un)intentional spread of misleading claims. Such practices not only weaken genuine climate efforts but also expose businesses to reputation damage and legal risks, including lawsuits. Fake news aimed at undermining climate science and environmental regulation adds to the challenge. The discussion will explore how media, policymakers, and businesses can respond by improving transparency, ensuring accurate communication, and promoting accountability to build public trust and support effective climate action.
